The bill splitting app, replaced by a text.
BananaTab is a bill splitting service you use by text, not an app. You text it a photo of the receipt, or just what the bill was and who was there. It works out each person's share with tax and tip included, then sends everyone a receipt and a Venmo request once you say yes. Your friends install nothing.

Questions people ask
Do my friends need the app?
No. There is no app. Your friends get a text with a receipt link and a Venmo request. They need Venmo to pay, and nothing else — no download, no account, no group thread to be added to.
How does BananaTab handle tax and tip?
Tax, tip and fees are spread across everyone in proportion to what they ordered, so the person who had a salad doesn't subsidise the person who had three cocktails. If the bill only has a total, it's split evenly. Odd cents land on you, the person who paid, and your friends are never rounded up.
What if someone had more than their share?
Tell BananaTab who had what, or send the receipt and assign items. Shared items like appetizers are divided among whoever shared them, and the person who left early gets a receipt for the pasta and the beer they actually had. Everyone's receipt shows exactly what they're paying for.
Does BananaTab send money?
No. BananaTab never holds or moves money. It sends Venmo requests on your behalf and tracks who has paid. Payments go directly from your friends to you.
Will BananaTab send requests without asking me?
Never. It shows you the split and waits for a yes. Reminders to people who haven't paid also only go out when you approve them, and they stop after three per person.
Who checks the math?
Every split is checked twice by two separate systems before a single request is sent, and anything over $500 gets an "is that right?" first, because an extra zero is the expensive mistake.
Can I split a bill online instead of in an app?
You split it by text, and everyone's receipt opens in a browser. There is nothing to install on either side: you text BananaTab, your friends tap a link and see what they owe and why.
Can I split the tab at a bar?
Yes. Text the total and the names and the tab is split evenly, or say who had what and it splits by round. The requests go out once you say yes, usually before anyone has left the parking lot.
Does it work for things other than restaurants?
Yes. Any shared cost works the same way: the Uber home, the Airbnb, the groceries, concert tickets, a group gift. Text what it was and who was in on it. For a restaurant check line by line, see splitting a restaurant bill; for a weekend away, keep one tab open for the trip.
Can I keep one tab open for a whole weekend?
Yes, and that's the better way to do a trip. Open a tab, add the Airbnb, the groceries, the gas and the one dinner that got out of hand as they happen, then settle it once with a single set of requests instead of a spreadsheet on the drive home.
What happens if someone doesn't pay?
Ask "who still owes me?" and you get the list. Say yes to a nudge and BananaTab sends it, once, to that one person. It stops after three per person and tells you to follow up yourself. No reminder ever goes out that you didn't approve.
Do I get anything for being the one who pays?
You get points for it. Every new person you split with earns you points, and they earn points for paying through BananaTab too. Points are redeemable for rewards from your account page. It makes being the organiser feel less like being the bank.
What does it cost?
Splitting is free. Standard message and data rates from your carrier may apply. Reply STOP at any time to stop receiving texts.
